Joanna Popper, the Producer of “The ABC's of Eating Disorders” was interviewed on the new documentary and her thoughts on the Pro-anorexia websites

Miami, Florida-- November 9, 2004. Miami documentary filmmaker Joanna Popper was on Anderson Cooper 360 Monday November 8. She was interviewed about “The ABC’s of Eating Disorders”, a documentary film on eating disorders she is making with Miami filmmaker Arne Zimmermann and Zakto Film. Eating disorders are epidemic in America.

In a five part series called “Starved to Perfection”, Anderson Cooper’s show is covering different aspects of eating disorders each day this week. Monday’s episode focused on the pro-anorexia website. There is much controversy around these websites, as their supporters claim that they are choosing anorexia as a lifestyle. In the interview Joanna Popper cautioned against this viewpoint and said “Anorexia is not a lifestyle, it’s a ‘deathstyle.’ Anorexia is the leading cause of death among young women.”

The documentary was made to increase awareness on eating disorders, let people know they’re not alone, and encourage people to seek treatment. In the piece, anorexics, bulimics, and compulsive overeaters of all ages, ethnic groups, races and genders share their intimate experiences. In addition to stories of people with eating disorders, health professionals from treatment centers the Renfrew Center and Milestones in Recovery are interviewed on the facts on the disease, symptoms, causes and recovery.
